Humbuk & Bukhum

Written by: Barbara Rus

“Humbuk and Bukhum are two elf buddies, and although the elves’ everyday lives are often filled with tinkling tassels, giggling and merriment, this is not always the case… The little elves’ lives are turned upside down when one day they get completely lost and find themselves in an old, abandoned cottage. They have so many adventures and explorations to undertake – adventures they could never have imagined before! Are you ready for the adventure? Join Humbuk and Bukhum on an extraordinary journey!”

And so a therapeutic storyteller book was born…

Since I was a little child, fairy tales have been a compass guiding my whole life. The idea of a fairy tale always starts from within the heart. The author unfolds a piece of his very soul, and like a wood-leaf, it goes wherever the hand may reach. This is also the way the tale of Humbuk and Bukhum was born. Every human being here on this planet needs a spiritual anchor that he or she can occasionally pull out. It can be music, a story, a work of art. I wanted to write a story that would bring hope, faith and guidance to people of all ages, at any given moment in their lives. The story of the two little elf friends is a therapeutic tale accompanied by guided trail walks and workshops.

What makes this fairytale book so unique…

While reading the story of Humbuk and Bukhum,

every little detail in the story comes to life. And if you’re sufficiently receptive, you could even find answers to your own hardships and questions. I know for sure that this tale is not merely a tale, it is so much more than that. It is precisely that which makes it so distinctive. And Humbuk and Bukhum, the two elf friends, will be engraved in our hearts for eternity.

The seven-mile magic boot flew her to Békéscsaba, where she worked as a teacher in a local kindergarten for three years, while she completed a training course in Szeged to become a puppeteer group leader and also got acquainted with Waldorf pedagogy in Solymar. Like a dream woven from a golden thread, the Walking Puppets’ Art Village was born from her thesis work. Its theme was how to implement a new branch of art into kindergarten artistic education. In her thesis, she combined puppetry and stained glass to create a uniquely designed, rotating and moving puppet theatre, the Walking Puppets’ theatre. Here puppets are walking around the world of fairy tales. At a conference in Szolnok in the autumn, she was awarded the “Our Discoverered Talents” prize. Since 2013, she has been the Founder and Director of the Walking Puppets’ Art Village. She writes her own stories, plays and seasonal artistic and educational plans for children. She lives with her husband, Dr.Rus Paul Ovidiu, in a fairytale garden on a never-ending street. Her cardinal goal in life is to make sure that everyone who enters through this magic gate becomes and remains happy…

Feedback

„Dear Barbi! I read the story several times, first aloud, with Andorka. You should have seen the smile on his face when we first started reading it. At the end I asked him to tell me what it was about. He told me about the elves and what happened, in a nutshell, but very accurately. I, on the other hand, could see behind it, a lot. You depict real life very well in this fairy tale world, it comes through clearly who the sprites are, what the suitcases are about, the daring dreams, the journey itself, the boldness… it’s all very thought provoking, I’ll definitely be reflecting on it a whole lot more. For the grownups, this fairytale means something quite different than for children. It can give the sick people a feeling of hope, the strength to bear the burden, because they can endure. I heartily recommend it to all those who are struggling, and to those who are not striving, because often the light little handbags fly away and suddenly we find ourselves carrying heavy suitcases.
